Meaningful Change

What is change?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, change is:

“An act or process through which something becomes different.”

Wayne Dyer said it this way:

“My goal is not to be better than anyone else but to be better than I use to be.”

Whenever we are doing something (new or otherwise) our capacity to experience life can change, we can change.

When setting a goal (something we want to achieve or become), we need to be mindful of the process of change.

There will be resistance to the change - the job is to maintain our persistence consciously.

Feelings of fear, doubt, discouragement or any form of negativity are made up of habitual responses to pushing past our (self-imposed) current limits, in whatever capacity this may be.

They’re self-imposed because something inside tells us to stop; it’s too hard, I can’t, I’m too old, what will people think? or a whole range of other limiting self-talk.

These are self-restrictive thoughts and feelings. Their aim is to maintain the status quo. (As we all know maintaining the status quo may be comfortable - it isn’t going to enrich our life in any way, though).

This is where we feel the tension of resistance. Unfortunately, this is where most people give up and give in to those self-limiting habitual beliefs about themselves.

Here it is important to consciously persist with the achievement of our goal, our desire, because we understand this is a normal and natural step in personal growth - The tension and resistance is there because we are stepping beyond our current level of self, our current level of comfort.

My job as your coach is to help you remain present to these, while at the same time, encouraging, supporting and holding you accountable, to continue to take the actions needed.

For you to be aware of what is going on, as an observer - without getting drawn into the negativity, which limits your growth.

Without the tension and resistance, we wouldn’t be growing, because we wouldn’t be stretching ourselves.

Similar to building strength in our muscles. To do this we need to consistently lift enough weight to push past our current level of ability, just long enough for the muscle to tear (even though we feel the resistance to doing so because it is beyond our current level of strength). Then as the muscle repairs itself in between sessions it becomes bigger and stronger (it grows).

Doing this in either a physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual capacity, means we are expanding beyond our current level of self, including that part of us that doesn’t want to do it - the part of us that is resisting the growth.

This is what happens in evolution, in nature, it’s always being tested and stretched to grow beyond its current level.

We are also meant to grow and evolve consistently - not to remain stagnant.

We can use this natural law to our advantage by consciously persisting with our desire to grow.

This will expand our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual capacity beyond its current level.

The destination, (achieving the results we want in life), is a side benefit. It’s all about the ongoing process of enhancing, becoming, evolving as an individual.

Michelle Obama puts it beautifully:

“For me becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.”

When we become an active conscious participant in this process it becomes so much more enjoyable because we are more or less flowing with life.

Remember though, flexibility and adaptability are key because things won’t always unfold exactly how we think or want them to.

→ Usually in hindsight these deviations work out for the best. 😊🧡

And if we trust this process, we will experience far less annoyance, frustration or anger about how things should be.

Clarity of Vision & Values + Alignment + Intention + Committed Action = CHANGE (Personal Growth)

Put another way - Intention and Committed Action is to Persist Consciously

In effect we are saying to ourselves:

“I’m not giving up on my goal, my dream. I hear those discouraging internal and/or external voices and appreciate that they think they are helping/protecting me. However, this is something I want to achieve and I have MY OWN voice.” 🤩🌟

“It doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from. The ability to triumph begins with you always.” “You define your own life, don’t let other people write your script.” Oprah Winfrey

We’ve all heard before that everyone can achieve. That no one is special or more talented that another. They had to decide, start and maintain the intention, then consistently take the necessary action steps to reach their goal. We all have that ability. We just have to exercise our will and remembering our worthiness by becoming more aware of, and working through our limiting beliefs/feelings/blocks, one step at a time. It’s an evolutionary journey of living our life on our terms.
